What is a link?

Links can be a text or image on a website page that a user can click so as to access or get connected to another document/web page.

Let’s see some of the definitions of a link;

When talking in terms of communication, a link is a connection between two devices.

A link refers to the capability of sharing or viewing shared information in data management or a file system.

In terms of the Internet, a link is more appropriately referred to as a hyperlink that can connect two different documents as well as various sections in the same document.

In HTML, the <a> tag – Used to create a link between different objects and web pages on a website.

The <link> tag – Used to create a link between a web page and an external resource in HTML.

Soft links and hard links are used to make links between files/directories in Linux.

So, basically a very simple way of putting the links is anything that leads you to somewhere after you click on it is called a link. It could be in the form of text, image, and even video.

There are so many types of links available on the web and let’s discuss them in detail with the pros of using them.

Internal link

Internal links are easy, fast as well as free to create. It appears in website navigation and also in the content. Internal links are the links you see on a webpage that navigates you to another web page of the same domain. They pass authority from one page to another.

External link

Links from other sites into yours can be called external links. They point to a separate domain and are difficult to control. It appears in the body text as well as in the content. If another website links to you, consider it an external link to your site and vice-versa.

Hyperlinks

By clicking on a hyperlink enables you to jump to the different text elements in a post or different websites. Hyperlinks are implemented using the <a> anchor tag and <link> link tag. The <a> tag is used to create a link between different objects and web pages on a website. The <link> tag used to create a link between a web page and an external resource in HTML.

Permanent link (Permalink) is a link that enables a user to link to a post, article, web page, or other Internet content that is dynamically created.

Backlinks

They are also called inbound links and are created when one website links to another. Backlinks to your website are a signal to search engines that others confirm for your content.

There are two types of backlinks: one is a do-follow backlink and the second is no-follow backlink.

DoFollow backlinks

DoFollow links help a lot in increasing the ranking of your site in the search engine and it can prove to be very beneficial for your blog. There is no attribute in a DoFollow link.

Guest blogging is also known as guest posting, it is the practice of contributing a post to another person’s blog in order to build strong relationships, exposure, authority, and links. The concept of guest blogging is that you write a blog article according to the requirements of a particular blogger and get a backlink in return.

There are two types of links in Linux/UNIX systems:

Soft link (symbolic link)

A soft link is very similar to a shortcut option available in Windows. It contains information about the destination file. The symbolic link points the link to the file or directory name. While posting an answer to the other questions you can add your website URL to some of the business-related words in that answer. Then while reading your answer in quora people may click on those words which are added with your website URL. This is the process to get backlinks and traffic to your website.
